According to legend, the people of the Zillertal are a cunning mountain folk who communicate through yodeling. Well, cunning maybe not so much – sometimes a bit stubborn, but all the more lovable once you get to know them. And even if it may not sound like it at first, the locals do speak German with each other, albeit more or less modified. In the Zillertal, a highly touristic region, the dialect is still actively spoken, lived, and loved today – whether in hotels, restaurants, or in private life.
If you’re visiting Tirol for the first time, knowing a few Zillertal dialect words – and maybe even pronouncing them correctly – not only makes communication easier, but can also melt even the most stubborn Zillertal heart.
The Zillertal dialect has some unique features. For example, instead of “dann” (then), the words “oft” (pronounced “oft”) or “oftang” are used. Additionally, unlike in the surrounding Inn Valley, “henn” is used instead of “senn” (which means “are”).
Example: “Oftang henn ma huam gongen.” means “Then we went home.”
Sometimes the accusative is also omitted:
“I hu da geang.” instead of “I hu di geang.” (“I like you.”)
The Zillertal dialect allows locals to communicate in the way they’ve always been accustomed to. It is a dialect well worth reading, learning, and appreciating!
